Good fire …

… And apropos of Br. Major General Henry Knox (segueway from my last post on John Adams in which he has a cameo, hauling the cannons from Ticonderoga) I attended the table lodge of said Lodge. The Grand Masters of Maine and Massachussetts were present, as well as approx. 80 guests. There were a few [...]

Harvard Lodge, squared

I had the pleasure of visiting Harvard Lodge twice this past week. The first time was for a Third degree (in Cambridge Masonic Temple), and then at their usual turf, Grand Lodge in Boston (picture), for a stated meeting and a lecture. Two very different meetings, but both great experiences. And these guys are so [...]

Open house

I’ve only been in Boston for a few days, but I wanted to see Grand Lodge; as it happened I noticed that there was an open house today, as part of the 275th anniversary of freemasonry in Massachusetts. So I decided to spend an hour there.
The building is great, and a “Masonic Ambassador” gave me [...]

Last night I visited another lodge, Lodge 500, in Dublin. The work in the lodge room was kept brief to allow time for their Installation dinner. It was an enjoyable evening in the presence of the Brethren and the Deputy Grand Master, and it was of particular interest to me, as such an occasion is [...]

As the old year winds down, I already have my mind half way into the new. So here are some of the Masonic stuff I intend to get involved in:
Dublin: We’re still here, and I still haven’t had a proper run-in with Irish freemasonry. I want to see a degree, with a candidate; preferably all [...]

Lodge Minerva

So, I had been to Grand Lodge in Dublin twice already: to see the museum and tour the hall (see earlier entries). When I came back the third time, it was to visit a lodge.
It was a bit of a stumble, actually. I had, as mentioned previously, been given a trestleboard and decided on a [...]

The home of Irish freemasonry

I went to Grand Lodge intending to obtain a trestleboard to catch a meeting. And I was very fortunate to run into the Assistant Grand Secretary, MM. MM was very knowledgeable in the different rites of the world, including Swedish Rite, so that was a nice surprise. He showed me around in the magnificant building, [...]

California Craft

So, finally getting around to looking back over the past three months … It’s difficult because from just a handful of lodge visits, I am obviously in no position to make any sort of judgement on the state of American freemasonry.
But I was fortunate enough that I got to see all three Craft degrees as [...]

Dublin/Howth, Ireland

The first, jetlagged week has passed since we came to Dublin. We are staying in a nice little tourist/fishing town called Howth, just north of the city. Being back in Europe is actually a bit of an anti-climax after the friendly laziness of California, but I do love this time of the year (and seasons [...]

Mission again

Went back to Mission lodge to see the same candidate* raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason.

It was quite an experience. Particularly the second part, which is the mystical drama concerning a central Masonic figure, was quite a show. Again, ritually this was so different from the Swedish Rite that it may as well [...]
